Abstract : Universiti Malaya |
Pahang faced British colonisation era at the end of the 19th century under the ruling of Sultan Ahmad. A new system was brought in by the British through their first Resident in 1988; and this has caused tension and disturbances especially to the Sultan. This article looks at and discusses the tension and problems faced by not only Sultan Ahmad but his chieftains and commoners. Amongst the disturbances are: the allowance issue, establishment of the police force and council, slavery issue, and appointment of Tengku Mahmud as the crown prince. Sultan Ahmad was frustrated with the intervention from the British which resulted in him seeking solace to Pulau Tawar. The tension that resulted from these issues was later seen contributing to the Pahang Uprising. |
